6 steps to perfect letterpress
- Choose an experienced printer. Ask other designers for recommendations, and ask the printer for work samples.
- Understand the strengths and weaknesses of letterpress. Letterpress has become a style today, but it's really just a printing method. Talk with your printer about exactly what you're looking for.
- Get it right the first time. Make sure you proof copy thoroughly before you send it to the printer. Your printer will probably be working from metal or polymer plates that can't be corrected once they're made.
- Ask about fonts. If you plan to use hand-set metal type or wood type, find out early in the project what fonts are available. Your choices will likely be limited.
- Choose the right stock. Paper plays an important role in the success of a letterpress job. If you want the popular letterpress style, you'll need to spec a soft, cotton paper to achieve a deep impression.
- Trust your printer. Experienced printers know their machines and what it takes to print a job right. Ask for their advice and take it.
